call me obsessive
posted June 07, 2004 at 03:05 pm

Proof that I am very anal about certain things:

Outlook just crashed on my computer and I closed every open item on the taskbar (about a dozen or so total) before restarting it - because Outlook must be the first item on my task bar or I'll go bonkers!!

Every morning, I open the software I use in a particular order, and I expect them to appear on my task bar in that same order while I work: Outlook, Internet Explorer (I open at least three sessions of this right away), OneNote, Excel, and EditPlus. The first two are the ones most likely to cause me serious consternation if they are not always in the same spot, and if they crash, I curse and proceed to close everything else down and start over.

Just one of those little quirks I have which makes me so darn lovable. :-)

Hehe, I'm the same way. If I have to restart a program for some reason and I have Firebird open, I have to make sure I've finished reading every tab before I close the browser to get everything in order again. :)

Okay, you're obsessive. (Sorry, couldn't help myself :)

Not that I'm one to talk; I do the same thing myself.

Hehe. Glad I'm not alone! :)

Oh my goodness, I'm not the only one! :) I use Eudora for email, and only use Outlook as a scheduler/contact manager etc., and I minimize it to the Task Tray, but my Task Bar must have Eudora, then Firefox, and then anything else that I'm going to use.

Argh! Your comments form wouldn't let me post at first just because I used my main email address with my last name in it (which has the word s*x in it).

love your site, have read all the archives, tips & tricks, etc, but do you have another site somewhere or do you really post so infrequently here?

by Michele | 06.09.04 03:55 AM

Hehe with me its only that I must have Feeddemon, Firefox, Thunderbird and my IRC (trillian) tabbed window at once on my taskbar, doesn't matter on the order. If it isn't there I start hyperventilating and fire up taskmanager to find it. However I launch the programs from the quick launch so they're always in teh same order :) FF, TB, IRC, FD !

Alas, Michele - this site is the only one I've been posting on for now. Work's been pretty consuming since the 3.0 Release. :(

I'm trying to post a bit more frequently now that the initial furor has died down; and after I manage to find some time to upgrade *myself* to 3.0, I hope to have some more to add to Tips & Tricks too. I'm hoping to be inspired by some of the new features once I have a chance to dig in!!

Arvind - welcome to the club. :)

Why are you still using vanilla IE when you could use Avant Browser (http://www.avantbrowser.com), an IE conversion which has (almost) all the functionality of Mozilla - tabbed browsing, mmmm....

by Christian | 06.09.04 09:39 PM

... perhaps because AvantBrowser (or any type of browser that replaces the IE frontend) is still based on Internet Explorer, and is therefore as good as a load of clutter that's based on a fundamentally flawed codebase :) :) :)

Just use Phoenix / FireFox, and be done with it. :D

haha.i'm not quite that bad, but when i want AOL and WMP open, AOL HAS to be first or I get annoyed.

by Jenny | 06.17.04 07:52 PM

I hope you are doing ok Girlie! I'm really looking forward to a new post posted on your blog to keep us posted. I went a few days without posting a post, and when I posted one I didn't expect anybody to post a comment since I got lazy posting, but they did!

I hope you had a nice weekend Girlie!

OK. We OC people have to look out for one another, so I'm going to let you in on a little secret. You can reorder your taskbar. :)

by Kevin Donahue | 06.21.04 08:05 PM

Oooh sweet!! Thanks for sharing that!

Did you get my email reply back to you the other day? :)

by girlie | 06.21.04 08:17 PM

Kevin Donahue is my hero!

There must be a name for this crazy taskbar sickness we have. - LOL

I use a Macintosh, and us Maccers have "The Dock", in which we can order the programs. Running programs mixed with just links to start them up, like a Start-menu combined with a taskbar.

by Jan | 06.22.04 05:39 AM

I'm usually only that way with the GIMP. There's 2 separate windows for the image you're working with and the tools. Both have to be right net to each other or I have to close the program that comes between the two windows.
I agree with those who reccommend getting Mozilla. It really is better :)

by Margaret | 06.24.04 10:11 AM

Wow, I'm the same way. Outlook must be the first thing on my taskbar. I never really thought about it, but that's the way I like it.

I have been wqanting the ability to do this for YEARS! I downloaded PCMag's ButtonBoogie and now I am so happy, I can get things in the order I want them... thank you for this connection!

this taskbar sorter is the best, most intuitive. lets you directly drag the items where you want. once installed, hold alt when hovering over the app in the bar.
