Dear Me,

It's Valentine's Day. I know you're not big on hearts and flowers and mushy love stuff, but there are a few things you need to hear.

First of all, I think somewhere along the way in your life you got the message that you were unlovable, and ever since then you've been determined to prove that it's true. It doesn't really matter where it all began; the only thing that matters is that you begin to realize that you are lovable, and you need to stop doing things to yourself that you wouldn't do to other people you love.

Instead of beating yourself up over mistakes that you've made (and yes, I know you've made plenty of them), you need to recognize that mistakes are how we all learn. Yes, that sounds trite, but sometimes "trite" is truth disguised. And if you realize that every mistake made gives you an opportunity to learn something new about yourself, you'll see that it's okay to continue to take the risk of making more mistakes as well.

Second, stop obsessing about the negatives in your life. Here's another trite truism for you: You are what you think about.

Instead of worrying that you are too thin, be glad you aren't too fat.

Instead of pining away for the auburn hair of your youth, appreciate the faded glory that is now a beautiful strawberry blonde.

Instead of hating the mundane aspects of your boring job, enjoy the spirit and laughter of having co-workers that make you happy to be human.

Instead of fearing that you will always be alone, celebrate the freedom you have right now to do what you want without having to consider someone else first.

Third, start taking better care of yourself:

You really need to quit smoking. I know, I know, you've heard it a thousand times. But, seriously consider it, okay? You'll look and feel and smell much better if you do. And if that isn't enough, think of how bigger the dating pool will be when you're a non-smoker. =)

Go ahead and get that hair cut. It was nice to let it grow out again, but we both know it's just a pain in the ass to deal with. You'll be much happier with shorter hair, and it will look healthier, too.

Clean your room!! And then, get out of it!! You spend way too much time in there, in front of that damned computer. Remember when you used to take yourself out to dinner? What happened to that? Lord knows you need to eat.

Okay, so this letter didn't contain much mushy stuff, it's been more like a lecture thus far. Want some mush?

You're smart, funny, and charming (when you want to be, hehe).

Your heart is kind and generous (and you thought I didn't know that, huh?).

Your eyes are like windows to your soul: deep, dark, and mysterious.

Your smile is like that of Mona Lisa: there are secrets hidden behind it.

Your hands are delicate and warm, and communicate your love when you touch another.

Your feet - well, sheesh, I think they could use some help! Think about a pedicure, would you?

Love,

Me
