Another from Adam Kalsey - the MTWordCount plugin counts the words in your entry for display in your page.

And in this support forum thread, he presents some Javascript for getting a count on all entries in your blog (also discussed in the comments on the first link above).

Potentially useful if I decide to participate in NaNoWriMo this year.

Ah ha! This is where those 404 errors are comming from.
