tips and tricks for movable type

Just thought I'd document the steps I use for linking a template to a file.
1. Upload your template file to your blog directory (I put mine in a subfolder called templates).
2. Go into MT and select the template you want to link to the external file.
3. In the Link this template to a file window, type the name of your external file, such as index.tmpl. If you put it in a subdirectory like I do, it would be templates/index.tmpl.
4. Select all the code inside the Template Body window and delete it (don't use the spacebar, use the delete key).
5. Press Save.
6. You should now see the contents of your external template in the Template Body window.
Note that if you now edit your template inside of MT, it will change the contents of your external template as well.

i've been wondering what this was used for.. i've always been a little scared of it :-)
Currently I use 3 blogs for my site - philsown.com. One for the blog, one for "static pages", and one for my links page. I used the 'link template to a file' to keep my template modules consistent across all 3 blogs. Came in handy.
for some reason I thought this would make plugins dynamic (i.e. refresh every time the page is loaded). do you know a way to do that? for example I want my MTQuote plugin to refresh when someone hits the page... or at some interval.
